3 Garden Ticks and more Jack Snipe

Saturday 9th January
Perhaps not quite as cold today if it wasn't for the biting wind! Me and the Mrs had a good stomp round the patch today. Highlights were:

2 Red-throated Diver - West
3 Tufted Duck
2 Shoveler
1 Eider
6 Common Scoter

230+ Wigeon
9 Brent Geese
1 Peregrine
2 Mediteranean Gulls (ad and 1st winter)
4+ Water Rail
2+ Cetti's Warbler
1 Jack Snipe
15 Dunlin

50+ Lapwing
1 Whimbrel
29 Curlew
4 Black-tailed Godwit
3 Knot
2 Chiffchaff
7,000+ Starling roosting in Pines tonight rather than reedbed

But the big news was from the garden as we notched up 3 Garden ticks taking the tally to 47 - Mistle Thrush and both Lapwing and Little Egret flying over! Also in the garden today, 2 female Blackcap, Fieldfare, Redwing and Meadow Pipit.

  1. Another excellent day mate, I'm very gripped! I was hoping for a Jack Snipe today but the moor is completely frozen solid, including the lakes. The only ice-free water is the River Colne, so I walked the whole length the river bank and saw, well, not a lot - a Curlew, 2 Water Pipits and 25 Wigeon!

  3. Great photo of the Jack Snipe - I've yet to see one on the deck properly on the Axe. A rare opportunity. Superb!

  4. Thanks JR and Sue and Gavin - A much hoped for patch tick and a real performer in between the killer "Water Rail" activity!. Digiscoping does sometimes work!
