Bitterns and Buntings!

Sunday 24th January
A lovely day today with good spells of sunshine. Tried to see the Bittern with the Mrs today, but it was being a bit elusive and we only managed flight views as it flew out from a ditch right beside the road without us realising it was there! A very quick look on the patch produced at least 4 Barwits still on the cricket pitch, 1 Whimbrel, 7+ Reed Buntings, 1 Chiffchaff. A quick scan of the sea produced 3 RB Mergansers and 7 Great-crested Grebes.

We tried again for the Bittern this evening and had incredible luck as the bird flew in from the reserve end and landed in its favoured field and ditch. We walked round and then were treated to mega views as it came right out in the open to just 20 metres. Incredibly, I got the shots below (digiscoped) at 17.00hrs plus some video!

Also this afternoon, 2 Peregrines (male and female) perched in their favourite tree.

Yesterday's news - forgot to add an entry: 5 Shoveler still, 3 Gadwall, 5 Barwits and 1 Blackwit, 1 Kingfisher, 2 Cetti's Warbler, 1 Bullfinch and 2 Treecreeper (patch tick).
