Monday 19th September
Following on from all the excitement on Scilly, I just could not resist a day trip to the "Magical Isles" to mop up on a few Yanks! It was always going to be tight with only 4hrs on St Mary's, but hey, it had been 15 years since I had last seen Black -and-White Warbler over there and the same length of time for a Northern Waterthrush at Portland, so it seemed rude not to try!
All in all a very enjoyable day with Russ and Doug seeing some quality birds and I also caught up with some old friends.
The day list was as follows:
Scillonian Crossing ( outward and return)
Leach's Petrel - 1
Storm Petrel - 40+
Sooty Shearwater - 1
Puffin - 1
Bonxie - 1
Common Dolphin - 8+
St Mary's
Blue-winged Teal - 1 juv
Bee-Eater - 1 ad
Solitary Sandpiper - 1 juv (thanks Higgo)
Black -and- White Warbler - presumed 1st yr female
Pectoral Sandpiper - 1 juv
If we only had more time, we would have seen the Waterthrush and the Red-eyed Vireo too and I do like to be able to have my cake and eat it, but not this time!! Regardless, it was a great day.
Some very dodgy shots of the day below.
